GMAIL'S NEW LOOK IS READY

Back in July we showed you a preview of Gmail's new look, and we’ve been working this summer to make even more updates and improvements. Today, we’re giving you an in-depth look at the new design. If you like what you see, over the next few days you’ll be able to switch to the new look by clicking on Switch to the new look in the bottom-right of Gmail.

Streamlined conversations
Conversation view has been completely redesigned to help you read through your email threads. You’ll now see profiles pictures for your contacts, so it’s easier to keep track of who said what. We also stripped out as much as possible so you can focus on communicating with your friends and colleagues.

Elastic density
We know that you use Gmail from a variety of screen sizes and devices, so now the spacing between elements on the screen will automatically change based on the kind of display you’re using. If you prefer a denser view all the time, you can change your density manually in the Settings menu.

New HD themes
Themes have been completely rebuilt to enable us to bring you a new set of beautiful high resolution themes with imagery provided by iStockphoto. We've updated most of the old favorites as well and your theme will be automatically carried over to the new look. Go to the Settings menu to take another look at themes and choose the one that fits you best.

Smarter navigation
The navigation panel on the left keeps your labels and chat contacts in view at all times. It's also more customizable: you can resize the labels and chat areas if you want to see more, or hide the chat area entirely via the chat icon in the lower left. You can also use the arrow keys to navigate around the interface.

Better search
Click the dropdown in the search box to see a new advanced search panel, which makes it easier and faster to find exactly what you're looking for. You can use the same panel to create a filter from any search in just a few clicks.

We’re excited to finally share Gmail’s new look with you. We’ll be bringing these changes to everyone soon, but if you’d like to make the switch right away, we’re rolling out a Switch to the new look link in the bottom-right of Gmail over the next few days.

Showing only post titles on archive and label pages

When your contents grow, your index (multi-post) pages become bigger. This translates to longer loading time, and long loading time is of course no good to your blog because it sends your visitors away. One way to remedy this is by loading and showing only post titles on these pages. This will help speed up the loading time. It also make it easier for your visitors to browse your contents.

This hack will show only post titles on archive and label pages of your blog. Your homepage is unaffected.

Login to your to your Blogger account.
Go to Dashboard > Design > Edit HTML.
Back up your template.
Tick the Expand Widget Templates check box on top right of the HTML window.
In the code window, look for this line:

Now replace that line with the code below (just copy & paste) :

Click Save Template.
Here is the result for a label page, tested on this blog:

Add Google +1 button to Blogger

Google +1 (pronounced “plus one”) is a recommendation button somewhat similar to Facebook Like button. Both of them show friends that recommended your post. But while Facebook Like shows them under the button in your post, Google +1 shows them under your post in Google SERP (search engine results pages).

This tutorial will show you how to add a Google +1 button to every blog post in a Blogger blog. It allows your readers to recommend your posts to their Google friends and contacts right from your blog post.

This button will +1 the containing post, regardless the page you are at. It will work on both multi-post pages (home page, archive etc.) and individual/post page etc. You will have an option whether to include a counter or not.

(If you don’t want to add the button under blog posts, there is another method: Add it to a floating social media sharing bar)

Update Sep. 2011: Switch to the new Google +1 (asynchronous) script. Split the code into two parts, the first part (script) placed in the head section of template, the second part (button code) stays.

Let us proceed with the tutorial:

Go to Dashboard > Design > Edit HTML.
Back up your template.
Tick the Expand Widget Templates checkbox on top right of the code window.
Find the tag, and paste this script right above it:

Next, look for <data:post.body/> and paste the following +1 button code immediately under it:










Configure button
You can configure the button by changing the
attributes of the g:plusone tag in line 5 (in step 5).

Select the size of button by replacing the value of size attribute with a value from the table below.

7. Button repositioning
The +1 button code (in step 5) positions the button on bottom left of each post. You can change the positioning if you wish to.

* Position it on top of post
  Place the button code before (instead of after) <data:post.body/>.
* Position it on the right
  Change the float in line 4 from left to right.

Displaying button on static pages
Conditional tags prevent the button from appearing on static pages. If you want it to appear on static pages as well, remove the tags (step 5 line 2 and 7).
Preview before saving.

Google Analytics support in Blogger

Having a solid understanding of the traffic and visitor engagement statistics of your blog is one of the best ways to help it grow, and that’s why today we’re excited to announce that you can now easily connect your Google Analytics account with your blog.

Adding Google Analytics to your blog will give you more insight into where your visitors are coming from and help you determine which content they engage with the most. It's an easy to use, powerful, free product that is used internationally by businesses large & small.

If you already have a Google Analytics account, simply navigate to your blog’s Settings > Other tab and enter your blog's Google Analytics Web Property ID. Blogger will then insert Google Analytics code into your blog automatically, regardless of which template you're using, including mobile.

A few notes:

Google Analytics is supported on blogs using Dynamic Views, Layouts templates, and mobile templates, but not Classic templates.
Because of the technical differences in how Blogger’s stats and Google Analytics collect data, you are likely to see some minor discrepancies between the two.

Lightbox update

When we enabled a brand new photo viewing experience, called Lightbox, by default a few weeks ago, we heard from a number of Bloggers who preferred to use their own, previously installed Lightbox solution, or who simply wanted to continue blogging without the new feature.

Thanks to your feedback, we turned Lightbox off temporarily, and we’re re-launching it today with the option to disable it, along with a handful of fixes to bugs that you reported.

If you’d like to disable Lightbox on your blog, log in to Blogger and select “No” next to Lightbox in the Settings | Posts and Comments section (new interface) or the Settings | Formatting section (old interface).

Dynamic Views: seven new ways to share your blog with the world

As said a few weeks ago when we launched a completely rebuilt, streamlined authoring and editing experience, we’re in the process of bringing you a much improved and modernized Blogger. The next phase of these updates starts today with seven new ways to display your blog, called Dynamic Views.

Built with the latest in web technology (AJAX, HTML5 and CSS3), Dynamic Views is a unique browsing experience that will inspire your readers to explore your blog in new ways. The interactive layouts make it easier for readers to enjoy and discover your posts, loading 40 percent faster than traditional templates and bringing older entries to the surface so they seem fresh again.

Dynamic Views is much more than just new templates. With just a couple clicks, you’ll get infinite scrolling (say goodbye to the “Older posts” link), images that load as you browse, integrated search, sorting by date, label and author, lightbox-style posts for easy viewing, keyboard shortcuts for quickly flipping through posts, and one-click sharing to Google+ and other social sites on every post.

No two blogs are the same, so you can choose from seven different views that display text and photos differently. For example, if you have lots of photos on your blog, you may prefer Flipcard or Snapshot. If your blog is more text-heavy, then Classic, Sidebar (what you’re seeing now on Blogger Buzz) or Timeslide may be preferable. Here’s a quick description of each of the new views, along with links to some of our favorite blogs where you can check each of them out in action.

Adding a Dynamic View to your blog is as easy as changing your template. Log in to Blogger, click on the Template tab on your dashboard, and select whichever view you want to set as your default. Note that readers can still choose to navigate your blog in a different view by selecting from the pulldown in the upper left of the screen.

If you want to add your own touch to any of these new views, you can upload a header image and customize the background colors. We’ll be adding more ways to customize Dynamic Views in the coming weeks.

FACEBOOK'S NEW PROFILE WITH TIMELINE

Since the beginning of Facebook, your profile has been the place where you tell your story. People use it to share everything from the small stuff, like their thoughts on an article, to the most important events of their lives, like the photos of their wedding or the birth of their child.

The evolution of your profile

Back in the early days of Facebook, your profile was pretty basic – just your name, a photo, where you went to school…stuff you'd cover in the first five minutes you met someone.

Over time, your profile evolved to better reflect how you actually communicate with your friends. Now you can can share photos of what you did last weekend, and updates about how you feel today.

But since the focus is on the most recent things you posted, more important stuff slips off the page. The photos of your graduation get replaced by updates about what you had for breakfast.

Say you're catching up with an old friend – would you rather find out that they had eggs this morning, or hear about their new dream job?

The way your profile works today, 99% of the stories you share vanish. The only way to find the posts that matter is to click "Older Posts" at the bottom of the page. Again. And again.

Imagine if there was an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect all your best moments in a single place.

Introducing timeline – a new kind of profile

With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you've already shared. They don't just vanish as you add new stuff.

Timeline is wider than your old profile, and it's a lot more visual. The first thing you'll notice is the giant photo right at the top. This is your cover, and it's completely up to you which of your photos you put here.

As you scroll down past your cover, you'll see your posts, photos and life events as they happened in time. You choose what's featured on your timeline. You can star your favorites to double their size or hide things altogether.

Filling in the blanks

If important parts of your story aren't included on your timeline, you can go back to when they happened and add them.

Or go to your private activity log. This is where you'll find everything you shared since you joined Facebook. Click on any post to feature it on your timeline so your friends can see it, too.

Add apps to your timeline

Introducing a new kind of social app that lets you show the things you like to do on your timeline – the music you listen to, the recipes you try, the runs you take and more.

These apps also help you discover what your friends are up to. You can even join in if you want: play the song they're listening to, or watch the same TV show.

You can start adding some of these new apps today, but timeline won't be available for a few weeks.

When you get your timeline, you can choose to publish it immediately or take a few days to review what's there and add anything that's missing.

Now, you and your friends will finally be able to tell all the different parts of your story – from the small things you do each day to your biggest moments. What will you create? We can't wait to find out.

Your images never looked so good

Updated 09/21/11: After listening to your feedback we've decided to roll back and make improvements to the Lightbox feature. We will update this blog as soon as the feature relaunches.

Introducing Lightbox, the latest in a series of Blogger updates aimed at giving you an improved and modernized blogging experience. Lightbox is a whole new way to interact with photos. When clicked, images now expand into a shiny new overlay that displays them at their full size for optimal viewing.

Once an image is opened in the lightbox view, any other images from the same post will now appear as thumbnails along the bottom, which can be easily browsed by clicking the arrow keys on the left or right side of the lightbox.

This feature is automatically enabled for all blogs, which means you can see the lightbox view in action right now by clicking one of the images.

FACEBOOK NEW innovation ; SUBSCRIBERS OPTION

Choose What You See in News Feed

You're already getting your friends' posts in News Feed. With the Subscribed button, you can choose how much you see from them:

All updates: Everything your friend posts
Most updates: The amount you'd normally see
Important updates only: Just highlights, like a new job or move

You can also decide what types of updates you see. For example, you could see just photos from one friend, no stories about games from another, and nothing at all from someone else.

Choosing what you see is optional. If you don't want to change what you see from someone, just ignore the button.

Subscribe to Interesting People

The Subscribe button also lets you hear from interesting people you're not friends with—like journalists, artists and political figures.

If you see a Subscribe button on your favorite blogger's profile, this means you can subscribe. Just click the button to get their public updates right in your News Feed.

Just like with friends, you can choose how many and what types of updates you see after you've subscribed.

Get Your Own Subscribers

If you'd like to share your public updates with more than just friends, you can get a Subscribe button on your profile, too. People who subscribe to you will get posts you set as "Public" in their News Feeds. This is an entirely optional feature – you need to opt in.

To let people subscribe, go to the Subscriptions Page and click Allow Subscribers.

Once you allow subscribers, you can decide who can comment and what notifications you get. You'll also see a Subscribers tab on your profile, where you can see who subscribes to you.

You may find that you're already subscribed to some of your friends. You can set up some paramaters on what you want to received from that subscription. You don't have to get every update if you don't want it.

New friends are set to automatically become subscribers unless you aren't allowing subscribers.

If you unfriend someone, they are still able to subscribe to your public updates. The good side of this is that people like teachers can make public statements their students can see, without letting the students friend them. This could be a benefit for family members as well. The bad side is that anyone can see your public updates, friend or not. Any subscriber can comment on your public updates - a potentially good or bad feature, depending.

There are a couple of smaller changes to Facebook. A new feature is Smart Lists. You can star certain people to declare them Close Friends. That puts them on your Close Friends smart list. You can choose to share updates only with them.

There's now a View All Shares link for your updates. You can see how many people shared your updates and who they are.

FACEBOOK MADE MANY NEW CHANGES

Facebook is expected to make a lot of big announcements this week at f8. More on those here. The company is hardly waiting, however, to go ahead and get other changes to the user experience out there ahead of time.

They already added the subscribe button, new friends list options and new sharing controls. Now they’ve announced changes to how the news feed works and the ticker feature that they’ve been testing for a while.

The news feed will now surface content based on your Facebook visiting habits. Facebook’s Mark Tonkelowitz explains:

When you pick up a newspaper after not reading it for a week, the front page quickly clues you into the most interesting stories. In the past, News Feed hasn’t worked like that. Updates slide down in chronological order so it’s tough to zero in on what matters most.

Now, News Feed will act more like your own personal newspaper. You won’t have to worry about missing important stuff. All your news will be in a single stream with the most interesting stories featured at the top. If you haven’t visited Facebook for a while, the first things you’ll see are top photos and statuses posted while you’ve been away. They’re marked with an easy-to-spot blue corner.

If you check Facebook more frequently, you'll see the most recent stories first. Photos will also be bigger and easier to enjoy while you're scrolling through.

Querying for vulnerable sites or servers using Google’s advance syntaxes

Well, the Google’s query syntaxes discussed above can really
help people to precise their search and get what they are
exactly looking for.

Now Google being so intelligent search engine, malicious users
don’t mind exploiting its ability to dig confidential and secret
information from internet which has got restricted access. Now I
shall discuss those techniques in details how malicious user dig
information from internet using Google as a tool.

Using “Index of ” syntax to find sites enabled with Index browsing

A webserver with Index browsing enabled means anyone can browse
the webserver directories like ordinary local directories. Here
I shall discuss how one can use “index of” syntax to get a list
links to webserver which has got directory browsing enabled.
This becomes an easy source for information gathering for a
hacker. Imagine if the get hold of password files or others
sensitive files which are not normally visible to the internet.
Below given are few examples using which one can get access to
many sensitive information much easily.

Index of /admin
Index of /passwd
Index of /password
Index of /mail

"Index of /" +passwd
"Index of /" +password.txt
"Index of /" +.htaccess

"Index of /secret"
"Index of /confidential"
"Index of /root"
"Index of /cgi-bin"

Looking for vulnerable sites or servers using [/s3]“inurl:” or “allinurl:”[/s3]

a. Using “allinurl: winnt/system32/ ” (without quotes) will list
down all the links to the server which gives access to
restricted directories like “system32” through web. If you are
lucky enough then you might get access to the cmd.exe in the
“system32” directory. Once you have the access to “cmd.exe”
and are able to execute it then you can go ahead in further
escalating your privileges over the server and compromise it.

b. Using “allinurl: wwwboard/passwd.txt ” (without quotes) in the
Google search will list down all the links to the server which
are vulnerable to “WWWBoard Password vulnerability”. For more info Google it out.

c. Using “inurl: .bash_history ” (without quotes) will list down
all the links to the server which gives access to
“.bash_history” file through web. This is a command history
file. This file includes the list of command executed by the
administrator, and sometimes includes sensitive information
such as password typed in by the administrator. If this file
is compromised and if contains the encrypted unix (or *nix)
password then it can be easily cracked using “John The
Ripper”.

d. Using “ inurl: config.txt” (without quotes) will list down all
the links to the servers which gives access to “config.txt”
file through web. This file contains sensitive information,
including the hash value of the administrative password and
database authentication credentials. For Example: Ingenium
Learning Management System is a Web-based application for
Windows based systems developed by Click2learn, Inc. Ingenium
Learning Management System versions 5.1 and 6.1 stores
sensitive information insecurely in the config.txt file.

list down the links to the web server which gives access to
restricted directories like “root” through web. This directory
sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily
retrieved through simple web requests.

b. Using [ allintitle: "index of /admin”] (without brackets) will
list down the links to the websites which has got index
browsing enabled for restricted directories like “admin”
through web. Most of the web application sometimes uses names
like “admin” to store admin credentials in it. This directory
sometimes contains sensitive information which can be easily
retrieved through simple web requests.

Google serves almost 80 % all search queries on the Internet, proving itself as the most popular search engine. However Google makes it possible to reach not only the publicly available information resources, but also gives access to some of the most confidential information that should never have been revealed. In this post I will show how to use Google for exploiting security vulnerabilities within websites.The following are some of the hacks that can be accomplished using Google.

1. Hacking Security Cameras

There exists many security cameras used for monitoring places like parking lots, college campus, road traffic etc. which can be hacked using Google so that you can view the images captured by those cameras in real time. All you have to do is use the following search query in Google. Type in Google search box exactly as follows and hit enter inurl:”viewerframe?mode=motion” Click on any of the search results (Top 5 recommended) and you will gain access to the live camera which has full controls. You will see something as follows

As you can see in the above screenshot, you now have access to the Live cameras which work in real-time. You can also move the cameras in all the four directions, perform actions such as zoom in and zoom out. This camera has really a less refresh rate. But there are other search queries through you can gain access to other cameras which have faster refresh rates. So to access them just use the following search query.
intitle:”Live View / – AXIS”
Click on any of the search results to access a different set of live cameras. Thus you have hacked Security Cameras using Google.

2. Hacking Personal and Confidential Documents

Using Google it is possible to gain access to an email repository containing CV of hundreds of people which were created when applying for their jobs. The documents containing their Address, Phone, DOB, Education, Work experience etc. can be found just in seconds.

You can gain access to a list of .xls (excel documents) which contain contact details including email addresses of large group of people. To do so, type the following search query and hit enter.
filetype:xls inurl:”email.xls”
Also it’s possible togain access to documents potentially containing information on bank accounts, financial summaries and credit card numbers using the following search query
intitle:index.of finances.xls

3. Hacking Google to gain access to Free Stuffs

Ever wondered how to hack Google for free music or ebooks. Well here is a way to do that. To download free music just enter the following query on google search box and hit enter.
“?intitle:index.of?mp3eminem“
Now you’ll gain access to the whole index of eminem album where in you can download the songs of your choice. Instead of eminem you can subtitute the name of your favorite album. To search for the ebooks all you have to do is replace “eminem” with your favorite book name. Also replace “mp3″ with “pdf” or “zip” or “rar”.

Below discussed are various Google’s special commands and I shall be explaining each command in
brief and will show how it can be used for critical information digging.

[ intitle: ]

The “intitle:” syntax helps Google restrict the search results to pages containing that word in the title. For
example, “intitle: login password” (without quotes) will return links to those pages that has the word
"login" in their title, and the word "password" anywhere in the page.

Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in the page title then in that case “allintitle:” can be
used instead of “intitle” to get the list of pages containing all those words in its title. For example using
“intitle: login intitle: password” is same as querying “allintitle: login password”.

[ inurl: ]

The “inurl:” syntax restricts the search results to those URLs containing the search keyword. For
example: “inurl: passwd” (without quotes) will return only links to those pages that have "passwd" in the
URL.

Similarly, if one has to query for more than one word in an URL then in that case “allinurl:” can be used
instead of “inurl” to get the list of URLs containing all those search keywords in it. For example: “allinurl:
etc/passwd“ will look for the URLs containing “etc” and “passwd”. The slash (“/”) between the words will
be ignored by Google.

[ site: ]

The “site:” syntax restricts Google to query for certain keywords in a particular site or domain. For
example: “exploits site:hackingspirits.com” (without quotes) will look for the keyword “exploits” in those
pages present in all the links of the domain “hackingspirits.com”. There should not be any space between
“site:” and the “domain name”.

[ filetype: ]

This “filetype:” syntax restricts Google search for files on internet with particular extensions (i.e. doc, pdf
or ppt etc). For example: “filetype:doc site:gov confidential” (without quotes) will look for files with “.doc”
extension in all government domains with “.gov” extension and containing the word “confidential” either in
the pages or in the “.doc” file. i.e. the result will contain the links to all confidential word document files on
the government sites.

[ link: ]

“link:” syntax will list down webpages that have links to the specified webpage. For Example:
“link:www.securityfocus.com” will list webpages that have links pointing to the SecurityFocus homepage.
Note there can be no space between the "link:" and the web page url.

I - What do you need?

You may ask yourself do I really need my own SERVER to do a lot of the stuff that people talk about here. If you're an experienced developer, or a seasoned sysadmin, or maybe just a person with big needs, a site that gets a lot of hits, uses a lot of bandwidth, sure. But you don't always have to. This guide (hopefully) should help a lot of you make a more informed decision.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is your first step in getting a basic website up, maybe a small community of about 100-300 users max. You should expect to pay from $6/month to $20/month for a shared hosting package.
If you're paying more than that, you're being ripped off.

Dedicated IP

Getting a Dedicated IP isn't really going to make the site go faster, although dependent on your hosts network connectivity, it might appear to in some cases. Mostly, the only reason to get a Dedicated IP is to either get an SSL Certificate for secure websites, or if the host decides you generate too much load on other sites, and asks you to get one. You should probably expect to pay around $3 - $8 dollars for an IP of your own, depending on the host.

Virtual Private Server

VPSes are the next step towards getting your presence known. Once you've established your site, and you have grown more of a userbase, the load on your shared hosting may become too much for a single shared server with literally hundreds of other websites on it, even with a Dedicated IP. If your pages are loading very slowly, or things take a long time to get done, then you may need to go ahead and get your own server to do it on. It's kind of a good thing, because you get to try your hand at System Administration if you so choose, or you can hire some junkie (like me) on WHT or other job posting sites to do it for you. Either way, the load on your website is now way down, and the capacity to grow is now tenfold. It's not quite a dedicated server, though the machines running VPSes are powerful servers, it's really sort of limited, but will provide stability that makes shared hosting pale in comparison. You should expect to pay around $40 - $80 for a standard VPS.

Dedicated Server

A dedicated server is a big step, and should probably only be used in the case that you host a site that is traffic intensive, hosts a lot of downloads, images, or things of that nature. I'm not talking about your Christmas Party photo gallery that you got drunk at last year and started singing Prince at. I'm talking about sites like file repositories that allow anyone to upload, create an account, and does intensive database queries, and constant processing. Also, you might need a Dedicated Server if you need your own IP range. Most server providers have agreements with ARIN/RIPE (consult google for your countries IP provider), that will let you lease a large block of IPs, and assign it to one machine or more. The ballpark figure for this kind of venture is going to be around $100 to upwards of $600 a month. This may or may not include a management service, but I will cover that later.

Colocation

Got a box laying around that you want to use, or know someone that can build a rackmount server for you? Got money to burn? (gimme some) You can send your machine off to a datacenter, and they'll provide bandwidth and IP addresses for your machine to use. This is a costly method, because it includes power, network connectivity and usage, IP fees, and storage space. This is not to mention the admin you will need to hire, and a point of contact that can either goto the datacenter should a problem arise, or someone at the datacenter that can monitor your server, and that knows how to fix it in a timely manner. Most providers will ask that you commit to a certain amount of bandwidth per month, so don't expect to walk away from a colocation deal for less than $400 a month.

II - Where do you need it?

A good location can mean a night and day difference between your response times, and even network connectivity. As a personal preference, I choose to stay Central (Texas, Oklahoma, Chicago) because it provides equally good response time and good connectivity to both East coast and West coast customers, and even better to Central customers. That is up to your location however, and based on the location you choose, it will affect you in one way or another. Being that I am East coast, I have a slight advantage for Central and West coast providers, in that I can call them 1-2 hours earlier due to the time zone difference should a problem arise. Most providers I know keep good hours around 9am-7pm.

III - How to tell a good host from a bad one

Well, let's start off by saying most tech savvy individuals, in desperation for a quick buck will sign up for a reseller package, which means they are buying a bigger package from the provider, and they have the ability to host other people on that same account. That being said, a great many deal of providers that you see are actually resellers of a larger entity. For most resellers, the parent host provides the means of billing resellers and their customers, and allowing the reseller to bill their customers. Now that that's said, I can say that businesses that have made a real investment into the hosting industry, as in buying their own racks, setting up their own servers, registering themselves with the BBB (http://www.bbb.org/), and obtaining a business license in their respective state is a good way to see if you can really trust your host. You should really use the Search (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php) feature here, and just put in the name of the company and read on. and do your research on the company first, make an attempt to find a host that rubs you the right way, don't just go ooh look they have 85932958GB of space and 5832125GB of data transfer a month for $2.00 a month! That's another topic I will cover called "Overselling" later in this guide.

Now, a few good ways to tell that you're not being cheated or tricked in some way, is to have good contact information on the company you are looking at. Most respectable hosts will provide you with the following:

A phone number (preferably toll free)
A support, billing, sales, and abuse email address
Their mailing address, or company HQ address
A ticket or helpdesk system
Live support

You should call up the company (during business hours of course), and chat with a sales and support representative, just to test the waters a little, and see how they respond to you. Don't incessantly bug them, but try to deal with them a little, and see if they are respectful, and deal with your issues politely and efficiently. That not only helps you, but if their calls are monitored, and probably are, then you're helping that company train it's representatives, and giving people like me a job, which pays for my internet and lets you see this guide that I have taken (at the time of this sentence) 25 minutes to write. Now, on the subject of Indian support, personally it drives me nuts. Not to be disrespectful at all, but the language barrier is almost too much for me. I realize they work very hard, and most of them are very well educated, moreso than I. In any case, try to be respectful no matter who you're talking to, it's just common courtesy, and they're just doing their jobs. Most but not all companies choose to outsource their support to India, because it is cost effective. Saves a lot in having to hire employees to be trained on special software, when there is the same thing already available in another country.

IV - What should my host have?

For Shared Hosting, your host should have AT LEAST:

PHP4 or PHP5 Support
SpamAssassin or DSPAM Mail Filtering
A demo version of their control panel or billing software for you to try
A well formed, well thought-out website, kept simple and to the point
A security seal or certificate to indicate that they value your privacy
A very specific, tailored Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy

For Virtual Private Server hosting, your host should have:

An automated reboot facility
Decent response times for server-related issues (30 minutes or less)
A control panel selection for you to use on your server

For a Dedicated Server Provider, you'll want:

Free reboots, and free or minimalistic OS Reload fees
Server Staff to provide support in the event of an attack or a server failure due to hardware or security issues
A stable network that provides more than at least 2 upstream carriers
A courteous and professional support staff to resolve your inquiries or issues in a timely and friendly manner

V - [root@server #] --- ehhhhh... what?

My whatsamawhozits did WHAT to the WHAT? I'll admit, I do it sometimes, makes you appear to know a lot more than you really do. Doesn't really help the customer much if he or she doesn't know what it is though. This is something that a Server Admin will be able to do for you, this is really only applicable to VPS and Dedicated Server customers, but the time and money spent on the right server admin can mean the difference between an OK webhosting experience, and an AWESOME one. So what if you don't know how to recompile apache, your server admin does! That's one less thing to worry about, and there are people that will do this for cheap, even entire server management companies that will take care of EVERYTHING (for a modest monthly fee of course). If you have the time (or don't in this case), then hire a server admin to do all the dirty work. Shop around though, there are several companies to choose from. Off the top of my head, there's Rack911 (http://www.rack911.com/), ServerWizards (http://www.serverwizards.com/), and many more, just do some googling or use the search feature at the top of this page.

VI - Some common practices

Overselling:

Overselling is the selling of webhosting at a very cheap rate that includes insane deals, or massive amounts of disk space or bandwidth, operating under the assumption that you won't use it all, or much of it. This tends to drive more customers to that location, kind of like a sale at Best Buy, they sell everything at cost or cheaper to make more people go there, then drive the price up and offer Instant Rebates once they have a bigger customer base.

95th Percentile Billing:

Wikipedia describes 95th Percentile Billing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burstable_billing#95th_Percentile) as:

The 95th percentile is a widely used mathematical calculation to evaluate the regular and sustained utilization of a network connection. It is commonly used among all major internet transit and peering networks, as well as datacenters and ISPs for both capacity planning and/or calculating usage. It roughly means ‘for most of the time this was the throughput on the line’.

The 95th percentile is a good number to use for billing as it can allow the customer throughput bursts without additional financial compensation. Basically the 95th percentile says that 95% of the time, the usage is below this amount. Conversely, 5% of the time, usage is above that amount.

There are important factors to percentile calculation:

Sampling interval, or how often samples are taken (called also "data points").

* A percentile is calculated on some set of data points.
* Every data point represents the average bandwidth used through the sampling interval, calculated as the number of bytes (or KB/MB/GB etc.) transferred divided by the sampling interval length in seconds (effectively representing the average utilization for single sampling interval). The number is expressed in a data transfer rate as bits per second (Kbps/Mbps/Gbps).

And that is really all I have to say on that issue.

Linux is a type of unix based system. it's not unix but it's based off the same system.

That being said what you really mean is what's the difference between apache and IIS because the O/S doesn't directly handle web serving. Other components that work in the O/S do. eg: you can run IIS (web server) on a basic install of windows. you must first add IIS to the system)

If you use php/MySQL scripts mostly, it won't matter which you go with as functionality. But if your scripts use .htaccess files you will have to use an apache based server. 9 times out of 10 that means you're going to be working on a linux based machine.

If you want to use FrontPage extensions you can do that on Either Apache or IIS. Most companies hosting linux also have the frontpage extensions available.

The difference is much bigger if you have asp sites. Linux cannot run ASP natively like windows can. There are wrappers that some companies use to offer asp functionality, but it's crippled asp stuff and incomplete. the same is true using php on windows, but it's a much MUCH lower crippling problem. almost everything php will work on the windows installs.

Just like your desktop or laptop requires an operating system to work and run applications, your web server too needs an operating system that can manage various applications on both a multi-user and multi-tasking basis.

Unlike your personal computer, a web server has to deal with multiple users that may even run into thousands at a single point in time. To manage this load, these servers need to have operating systems that are crash-proof with the capability to handle large amounts of simultaneous data operations.

Two popular platforms that are generally used for web hosting servers are Linux and Windows. Both these platforms have their own advantages and drawbacks.

For hosting static web pages hosted in HTML the platform won’t matter. However, when you are planning to use dynamic database-driven elements on your website, like a content management system or a discussion forum, deciding between Linux and Windows is crucial.

Linux-based servers are more popular and they meet most common requirements that a website needs to operate. Linux runs on an open source model where there is an army of voluntary developers continuously working on enhancing the system. Linux is known to be more secure and stable, with capability of handling many more simultaneous operations as compared to Windows-based platform. Just the normal web address. Well, since it's a web address, it's a unique name. Hence, there will be no other same domain name. When you see exabytes.com, ever wonder ".com" stands for what? It actually stands for commercial. Whenever you see .com, .org, .net or others which ends after the final dot or period (.) of a url, it is known as top-level domain. It actually tells you what kind of website it is, indirectly. And the commonly used domain name extension nowadays will be .org, .net, .com. However, there are a lot of new domain extension up for grab lately such as .aero, .info, .museum, and .name. Next in the list that I shall explain is, Country Level Domain Name. Examples of country level domain name is exabytes.com.my. When I check my email, I often rely on the message snippets to figure out which messages to open first. Sometimes, though, I want to see more than snippets, which is why I’m happy to announce that you can now preview messages in your inbox using a new feature in Gmail Labs called Preview Pane. It’s probably a very familiar layout to those of you who have used Gmail on a tablet device. We also think it’s going to work especially well if you have a larger resolution screen.

After you enable Preview Pane from the Labs tab in Gmail Settings you’ll see a toggle button in the top right corner of your message list, which lets you switch between preview and list views.

For those of you who have more vertical space you can also move the preview pane below your message list. You can enable this using the dropdown arrow next to the toggle button:

By default there is a 3-second delay in marking a conversation as read after previewing it. If that doesn’t feel natural to you, you can change the timing in the General tab of settings:

Finding a Web Host Guide

So, now that you’ve got out of bed and decided to look for a web host you find yourself in a rather uncomfortable situation. There are 923,422,194 web hosts to choose from (I made that number up). At this point you can either start loosing your hair, or if you continue reading this guide you will choose the ONE web host that’s right for you without any headaches. You may want to get some potato chips or peanuts because this may be somewhat of a long read, trust me, it’s worth it, by the time I’m done with you, you’ll be telling all your friends how to find the right web host for them.

You’ve probably heard this one at some point in your life, but I cannot stress this enough, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This statement is especially true when it comes to web hosting, many companies will try to appeal to you with ridiculously low prices and tons of space and bandwidth (I’ll explain what that is later on). Let’s think logically for a few minutes, if you have an apple and want to share it with your friends, you’ll cut it into smaller pieces. Now let’s say you want to share your one apple with 200 of your friends, they’ll be stuck with small pieces and call you cheap. Here’s how this relates to the hosting industry, when you’re paying $2 for 200 GB bandwidth and 20 GB of space the company has to put a huge amount of people on one server to break even, so what happens is that the server becomes overloaded, and as punishment for falling for a scam like this your site may be very slow, or have lots of downtime.

The next thing that you may want to look at when searching for your hosting company is the location of their servers. First think of your website and what kind of visitors you’re expecting and where they will be coming from. You probably won’t want a web host with servers in China if you’re located in Texas and most of your website visitors are located in the United States. What’s going to happen is that you and your visitors will experience slow site loads because of the distance between them and the web host. Although the location of the web host is not THE most important thing, this will help you eliminate some companies.

The next thing you want to eliminate is ‘slow’ web hosts. ‘Slow’ is a relative term and once again depends on your location, and your ISP. I would ask a few friends of mine to help me out with this one, the first thing you may want to do is browse around the potential web host’s website and see how quick the pages load, this will give you an impression of how quick the host is. One thing I know is that most hosts will not host their website on the same server as their customers, so try to find a couple of sites that the potential web host is hosting and browse them, see how fast the pages load, see if there are any file downloads and check the speeds you get. Next you may want to check pings and trace routes; basically this will show you the health of the network of your potential web host. Follow the steps I mention to check the pings and trace routes. People with Windows should click Start, and then run. In the dialog box enter CMD then press enter. You will get a window called a DOS prompt in which you will type (without the quotes of course) ‘ping webhost.com’ (replace webhost.com with the address of the webhost). You will get 4 lines saying: Reply from xx.xx.xx.xx bytes = 32 time= XXms TTL=xxx. Your concern should be the time= XXms, rule of thumb for this number is the lower the better, anything under 150 is great, above 150 I’d be a little weary of choosing that company as a webhost. A trace route tells you how many computers you have to go through to get to your webhost, once again, the lower the amount of hops (computers) the better. Follow the same steps as above to get into the DOS prompt except now type ‘tracert webhost.com’ (replace webhost.com with the actual address of the web hosting company). Basically here you’re looking for the amount of hops and the time it takes for each hop, as with the pings, the lower the number the better.

So now that you’ve eliminated the cheaters, those that are far away from you, and the slow web hosts you have to eliminate those that lack in features. You need to find a host that you are comfortable with, if you’re just starting out then you need a web host with an easy to use control panel, almost every host has a demo of the control panel they use, make sure to check it out and are comfortable using it, if you’re not eliminate that web host. After checking out the control panel you may want to look at the stuff that you get with your account. Some examples are SQL databases, free scripts, forums, shopping carts. It’s safe to eliminate a host that doesn’t give you a single MySQL database for free. Free scripts such as forums and shopping carts are great, when you’re up to this point and have several companies to choose the one that gives you a better value i.e. more scripts, disk space.

You’re almost done finding the ONE web host that suits you, you have by this point eliminated many web hosts and are probably left with about 3 to 5 (hopefully). Now is a good time to check how well their support functions, and what other customers are saying about this web host. The first place to check is the companies forums (if they have them, my company doesn’t). Take a look at what the customers are asking, and look at the responses staff are giving, there may be some complaints on the forums as well. The next place to check is a site like TalkWebHosts, WebHostingTalk, or httpTalk, these sites are a bridge between web hosting companies, their clients, and their potential clients. You can find out almost anything about a company by visiting such forums, some important things to look for are the complaints, and the reviews. The reviews will usually mention how fast the support turnaround is some companies may offer 24/7 support however they may not deliver. Complaints often include things such as “Company XYZ is always down, my website only works an hour a day”. If a company only has a few complaints but many good reviews then it’s probably safe to sign up with them.

At this point you probably eliminated another company or two and you’re almost ready to purchase, now is a good time to look at the terms of service of the company, any refund policies, and guarantees. Some companies may sell your information, or even have the right to your first born but without reading the TOS you won’t know. Next take a look at the refund policy if the company has one. Some companies offer 15 Refunds, 30, 60, 91. The next thing to look at is an uptime guarantee most will advertise some number between 99% and 100% (like 99.88889%) (yes I’ve seen such a number before) one thing to keep in mind is that some companies may just refund you for the downtime, and some may refund the whole month, so take a look into that, this should allow you to eliminate another company.

With about two companies left now you should think of how well the host can grow with you, if they give you room to expand, or give you ways to make some money. If you can’t grow with the host then more than likely you’ll have to look for another one sooner or later (hopefully using my guide again).

After all this eliminating is done you are now left with your one ideal host, (if less than one go a few steps back, if more than one, start at the beginning of the guide). It’s now safe to fill out the order form. Although this step is optional but recommended, make a post on one of the forums giving your first impression of the company, and let everyone know that you used this guide to find your one ideal web host.

I would like to add.. in my opinion, avoid "unlimited plans". These plans include unlimited disk space, bandwidth etc. First of all there's no such thing in the market as unlimited hard drive, while it is possible for a host to have an 'unmetered' connection to the internet but it is still not unlimited in the true sense of word. Although the host provider may not meter the bandwidth, the host is still very much limited by the speed of connection., it makes it even less unlimited, and not a very accurate picture of what is being advertised.

Many companies use various 'unlimited hosting gimmicks'. It doesn't mean that the company is necessarily bad but you just need to approach those offers with caution. Typically, hosts who offer such unlimited space are grossly overselling their servers, which inevitably causes problems in the long run. But hey! im not saying that those people are bad people or that they don't know what they're doing. I believe setting reasonable limits is far better way running a hosting company for a long term.

And another important point. Has any hosting company talked about the "Success" of their clients? Providing excellent customer service is great, cpanel tools, autopilot etc. Some offer a few success stories.. nice-looking sites with stunning Flash animations etc. but with dismal traffic rankings. Every major small business Web hosting solution offers a variation on the Cheap-Quick-&-Easy theme. Be ready for it. Recognize it.

Free or paid web hosting?

Free or paid web hosting?

Just finished your first website? So it's the time to look for some hosting and make a choise. Your first qustion probably will be whether to choose free or paid hosting service. Let's have a look at some advantages and disadvantages of these solutions.

Free web hosting:
(+) It's for free. You don't need to pay for domain name.
(-) Your URL will be something like username.freehost.com or freehost.com/username. As I noticed above, the advantage is that you don't need to pay for domain. But note that if you move your website to another provider in the future you can loose some or all your traffic (there are some solutions how to solve this problem but it is not the point of this article).
(-) Your provider will probably include ads to your pages - usually 1 or 2 banners, sometimes popup windows. If you plan to use banner exchange on your site read carefully their Terms and conditions. Some free hosts doesn't allow it.
(-) Free hosts usually allow lower bandwith then paid hosts and a lot of them don't offer futures like PHP and MySQL.
(-) A lot of free hosts change their Terms and conditions during some time. If your free host offers hosting wihtout ads now, don't be surprised when banner or popup appears on your site in the future.
(-) Sometimes happens that free hosts cancel their free service and longer offer paid hosting only. In this case you have only 2 choices - pay them or loose your website.

Paid web hosting:
(+) You can host your own domain. If you decide to change the web hosting provider in the future, you easily transfer the domain to the new provider and don't loose your traffic.
(+) Most paid hosts offer 24/7 support via email or live chat and some of them provide toll-free phone support.
(+) You can expect better uptime then on free host. Some paid hosts offer uptime guarantee.
(+) Paid hosts usually offer enough disk space and bandwith. Futures like PHP and MySQL are standard. Even if you are not programmer you can download plenty of free PHP scripts from internet.
(-) Paid hosting coast money :)

Before you make the decision if choose free or paid host you should answer this question: How big ambitions do I have with my website? If you are starting small personal page for your friends consist of a few *.html files then free host will be sufficient. In case you plan to run serious business website, need PHP, database and don't want ads on the site I recommend to look for quality paid host.

My plusses and minuses for free hosts:
[-] Shifting TOS: it has been my experience that free hosts-- even the established ones-- have no problems shifting their TOS whenever they feel like it. You'll be allotted 20MB of disk space one day and the next day find yourself with only 15MB. Ditto with bandwidth.

[-] Shifting quality of service: free hosts will also shift their quality of service, often at the expense of their users. Tripod UK was, hands down, one of the best free hosts on the planet. Then two years or so, kablooey! They added an instrusive side banner in a frameset, and something like three different types of ads on each page! This wrecked the BBS'es that Tripod UK's users had so carefully set up with its generous offering of PHP.

[-] Instability: Chrono Cr@cker, I think that it's great that you have so much faith in Mihopa, but I wouldn't put too much faith in it. I've been through more free hosts than I can shake a stick at. Here today, gone tomorrow. Or generous offerings today, forced upgrades and curtailling of services tomorrow.

[+] Easy and hassle free. You don't have to worry about the finer points of getting a domain name, FTP'ing; easy page builder eliminates worrying about knowing html, etc...

Tutorial on Getting Web Site Traffic in Less Than One Day!

HOW TO INCREASE VISITOR TRAFFIC ON YOUR SITE

Every web site owner has wanted to drive additional traffic to their web site – and of course we’re all in a big hurry to do it. But have you ever thought about the fact that any webmaster can drive great qualified traffic to their site in less than one day? That’s right – you can literally set up an entire traffic driving campaign and see the traffic coming to your site even in the same day! Here’s how:

Harness the Power of Targeted Search with Google

The absolute fastest way to get really serious targeted traffic to your web site is to use the power of Google. You know, Google - the guys that get, oh say, over 50% of all searches conducted on the Internet today. Yeah Google - the guys who figured out how to produce relevant search results. Google - the guys who went public and made like 20 zillion dollars. That Google.

They have a brain-dead easy-to-use advertising product called Google AdWords – and you can set up an account, create keywords, have them appear on the relevant search terms in the Google search engine, and see real live qualified traffic to your web site in the space of a few hours.

Setting Up a Google AdWords Account Step-by-Step

Okay, take a deep breath. Settle into the chair in front of your computer and get ready to go. Follow these steps exactly:

1. Navigate your browser to: https://adwords.google.com/select and click on the ‘Sign Up Now’ area.

2. Select the appropriate language and gepgraphical targeting – ‘Regions and cities’ if you are a local business, ‘Global or nationwide’ if you serve all regions (we’ll use this setting for our example). Click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

3. Next you choose your countries. If you are a North American business, I highly recommend selecting ‘United States’ only. To do this – go to the right hand box entitled ‘Selected Countries’ and highlight ‘All Countries’ with your mouse. Then click the ‘Remove’ button. The ‘Selected Countries’ box will now be empty. Go to the left column and highlight ‘United States’ – then click the ‘Add’ button. Click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

4. Now you name your ad group and create your first online ad. Don’t worry – you can always go back and edit your ad at anytime. Just have fun with it for now! To get started, think up a name that you want to call your first group of ads. Type this name into the box labeled: ‘Name this Ad Group’.

Now go to section ‘A: Create Ads’ just below. You simply fill in the boxes and Google does this cool ‘automatic update’ that shows you what your ad will look like as you are filling in the boxes. When you have an ad that you like - click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

5. Choose the keywords that will trigger your ad. If you sell ‘tennis rackets’ then start with that keyword. If you sell ‘palm pilots’ then start with that. Once you have typed in a search term, you can always use the ‘Keyword Suggestion Tool’ link on the same page to expand your list. Google will automatically suggest words that may expand your traffic. Be sure to do a reality check against this list – it’s automated and some terms may not be appropriate for your business. Once you have a list of keywords, click the ‘Save Keywords’ button to continue.

6. Choose your maximum bid. I always set this to $.05 (five cents) to start. This is Google’s minimum bid amount. You can always change it later if you need more traffic. Type in .05 and click the ‘Calculate Estimates’ button. Ignore the resulting estimates – they are almost always wrong. Simply click the ‘Save and Continue’ button. At this step Google will ask if you want to create another ad group – simply bypass this step by clicking the ‘Continue to Step 3’ button.

7. Now you specify you daily budget. I suggest being conservative here as well. You can always increase this later. For now – figure out how much you can spend each month for traffic and divide by 30. Put in an amount that is this number or even lower. I usually start with $5 per day as a maximum. When you’ve decided, simply click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

8. Entering your contact information and password. This step requires you to give Google a valid email address that you can check – in order to send you to the final confirmation and billing step. Fill in your email and pick a password that you can remember – preferably one that has at least 1 numeral and is difficult to duplicate easily.

When you’ve filled in your information, click the ‘I agree – Create my AdWords account’ button.

At this point you should see the following message: “Thank you for signing up with AdWords. Please check your email (you@youremail.com) for a message from Google containing a link to our verification program.” Follow the link in that message to confirm that we have your correct email address.

9. Check your email and finish setting up your account. Go to your eamil and retireve the Google email. Follow the link inside – this will verify that your email is valid. Then simply login to your AdWords account using the email address and password that you supplied in the last step.

10. Once you log in you will see the following message: “Note: Your account hasn't been activated. Payment information is required in order to run your ads. Please provide your payment information on the Billing Preferences page in the "My Account" section. Typically, your ads will begin running almost immediately after you submit this information.” Simpy follow the ‘Billing Prefences’ link and enter your credit card information. When complete click the ‘Save Changes’ button.

11. Your AdWords account is now live! You will see traffic from your ads coming to your site almost immediately if you have selected popular keywords.

Then entire process described above can easily be completed in less than 2 hours. I just did it myself in less than an hour. Good luck and remember if you ever have any problems with the account running through too much cash – you can simply ‘pause’ the account giving you time to reduce your bids, or delete keywords. While you won’t become an AdWords expert from this start up guide, you will begin to see highly targeted web traffic come to your site in less than one day!

Introduction to FTP

FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a standard application protocol that uses the Internet’s TCP/IP protocol to transfer files from one computer to another.

FTP is a very common process today. FTP is commonly used to transfer web pages from the creator’s computer to the server where the web site is situated. Also FTP is used to download programs and files to your computer from a server.

How do I use FTP?

To use FTP you will need to install FTP software on your computer. There are many freely available FTP programs on the Internet such as, FTP explorer (http://www.ftpx.com) and Smart FTP (http://www.smartftp.com).

How do I connect with FTP?

Follow the steps below to connect to a server, to upload files using FTP Explorer:

Open FTP Explorer.

Click on the connect button on the toolbar or select connect from the Tools menu.

In the Profile Name text, enter a name to give your FTP connection.

In the Host Address text box enter the address of the server you are connecting to (this can either be the DNS entry or the IP Address).

Enter the Port number that the server accepts FTP connections on (the default port for FTP is 21).

Tick the Use PASV option, if your computer is behind a firewall, which does not allow external FTP connections.

Tick the Use Firewall option if your computer is located behind a firewall.

Either enter a user name for the FTP login or tick the Anonymous option (the anonymous option will only work if the server is set up to allow anonymous FTP connections – if this is selected go to step 10).

Enter the user’s password in the Password text box.

In the Initial path text box, enter the path on the server, where you want your connection to start at – this is optional.

In the Attempts text box enter the number of times to try the FTP connection if fails, you will need to have at least 1 in this text box.

In the Download path you can specify the path on your computer where to save the files downloaded from the server – this is optional, you can specify this later if you like.

To establish the connection with the server click on the Connect button.

How do I upload files using FTP?

Once you have established your connection with the server the next step is to upload your files to the server. The following describes how to do this:

Go to the path on the server where you want to upload your files to.

In the Tools menu click on the Upload button.

Select the file or files that you want to upload (to select more than one file hold down the CTRL key).

NOTE: You can also upload files by dragging and dropping them to the directory/folder on the server.

Click on the Open button. Your file will now be uploaded to the server. (You will see this uploading process in the dialog box.)

How do I download files using FTP?

You can also use FTP to download files to your computer from a server. The following describes how to download a file.

Make sure you are connected to the server.

Go to the file that you want to download.

Right click on the file and select Download To..

Select the path on your computer where you want the file to be saved to.

The file will now be downloaded to your computer. (You will see this downloading process happening in the dialog box.)

How do I end my connection?

You can end the connection by simply clicking on the Disconnect button on the tool bar or by clicking on Disconnect from the Tools menu.

Every webmaster cringes at the thought of moving hosts. Like moving your home it can be messy and sometimes problems arise. But if you follow these simple steps, your move will be less painful.

Backup Backup Backup

If you’ve been diligent with your backups, you’ve got a lot of insurance to fall back on yet always make the latest backup. If you haven’t, before you do anything else, do a backup now. Backup anything and everything you can and don’t forget your database if your site relies on it. Save at least 2 copies and store them separately. One for you to work with, and the other as an archive. Do not underestimate how easy it is to copy over these files as you make changes or simply mess it up.

If you’re moving to a host who has as different control panel, make a manual backup by downloading all your files because different control panels may not be able to restore the backups made by your old host. They also have different directory structures so your file trees will be in a mess. If you need to, make a small note file with notepad with memos for you to remember the old server configurations. This will help you as you make changes on your new host server and save the confusion moving back and forth between hosts. Remember to make the correct transfer type (ASCII or Binary) as you download. If your download is not right chances are you’ll have a tough time getting your site to work on the new host server.

If server logs are especially important, remember to backup those too. There is no good way of moving logs yet because different hosts may log statistics differently. So the best thing to do is to download it and use a log analyzer on your computer to make references to later on.

Gather Odds & Ends

1. A Good FTP program which you should have by now
2. Get your new host server’s DNS
3. It’s also helpful to have a script that tells you the server environments installed on your new host server for quick references.
4. Get the temporary URL on your new host so you can check your site before you make a DNS change.
5. If you have your host control the domain inform them not to change your DNS until you tell them to.
6. If you run scripts:
- Get a copy of the original installation guide and the script. Sometimes after moving the scripts just do not work right so you might need to install the script from scratch.
- Get a list of all the server paths such as Perl, Sendmail and home directory on your new server.
- If your script needs special server modules or programs ensure they are installed and where. Even though these might be covered before you ordered the account with the host but sometimes your host has removed it or haven’t installed it yet.

Inform Your Visitors

It is common and good practice to inform your visitors and customers of the server move. If you run a e-store, this helps assure your customers you have not fled with their money if there is any downtime. Also give an alternate email so you won’t lose emails in the transfer. You might also want to give periodic updates prior, during (if there is downtime) and after. If your site is large, doing this is helpful because your visitors can alert you whenever there is a part of the site not working.

Moving Day

Try to schedule the move at a time where there’s least traffic. Backup again just before you do the move so you’ll have the latest data. Start by first copying or creating your custom error pages onto the new host server. Put a small note in there about the move. You can always remove it later. Then upload the most visible parts of the site first i.e the main pages then move on to the less critical parts of the site. If you have a large site with many divisions you might want to split them across different days and instead move the least critical first. Just ensure you always do a backup before you do any moving. Use the temporary URL to check your site, visiting as many pages as you can.

Changing DNS

Once you’re satisfied, change your DNS over. This typically takes about 24-48 hours so you have time to make some minor changes if need be. You might want to also take this time to modify your old site’s error pages to inform your visitors of the move and give a new URL if there are URL changes. To help you determine if the DNS has resolved, make a small change on the new pages to differentiate between the old and the new.

Monitor

After you’ve moved and the DNS resolved, do not release the old account yet. Keep it as long as two weeks running concurrently. Go back and check the old servers for activity. Check your old email account and if you have a web based contact method on the old server check to see if any communication is left there. Once you’re comfortable all email and traffic is correctly directed to the new host server, you can cancel that account.

The brokerage That some company charges you is 0.01-0.03 percent in intraday 0.01-0.03 percent in futures, and 0.1-0.3 in delivery. It varies from company to company.

A general table is given below how to calculate it.

So on Intraday we have total Brokerage of 0.08220% on each trade of buy and sell, and 0.05684% in futures buy and sell. It is to be noted that the total is applied to one side only here as the buy and sell are already summed. You can include your brokerage in the above table and get the total brokerage that is charged.

The brokerage structure mentioned in the above table is the hidden charges or we can say the additional charges other then brokerage which are always payable. Most of the broker wont tell you that…so whenever some broker tell you that they are giving you this brokerage then just add the above mentioned.

For example: -
If you a share in intraday (Same day square off) of XYZ company at price say 100. Then total price of the share you should consider is 100 X 0.08220% i.e. = 100.0822 Rs.
This means is that until and unless you sell the above share above 100.0822, you didn’t gained any profit, because until that part you have paid price of the share plus the brokerage. So if you sell the share on 100.50 then total profit you made is not 50 paisa but 100.50-100.0822 = 42 paisa appx.
Now this does matter to some new traders that what impact 10 paisa can make on a trade. But when we trade on high volume and large capital this 10 paisa makes the big difference.

Introduction

Over the years I've heard some strange laws from around the world and usually took some of them with as an urban myth. Some of these so called "laws" are so extreme that you have to assume they are fake, or so old that they make little sense in the 21st century.

This afternoon whilst going to the shop for milk, I was lucky enough to witness a strange law (almost) in effect. I;m a resident of England, and we have out fair share of strange laws. This one in particular seems to be common knowledge, except to the police officer in question.

I overheard a pregnant woman asking a police officer for his helmet because she needed a pee.I laughed, a lot, especially when he flipped out and thought she was trying to make fun of him. The law in question states that "a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants – even, if she so requests, in a policeman’s helmet"

This got me thinking of some of the other laws that are just plain strange! This is 101 of those laws, and if you know of any more (please don't make them up) leave them in the comments at the bottom.

Back again with a blogger hack and this time with a coolest thing. You can see 'Show Table of contents' section in my blog now where all my table of contents will be loaded with one click. You can try it just to see what table of content looks like if you haven't seen it earlier. Well before starting to write about this blogger hack, i want to remember Hans of beautifulbeta who created this blogger hack as far as i know. Well, i am deriving his codes and hacks but i am trying to write in a much simpler way then him. So here is the process to create a Table of contents in your blog.

Table of contents helps your readers to find your posts easily. Just add some codes and all your posts are one click away from your readers.
Goto blogger 'Edit HTMl' page and search for the code with id=main. This is the section which held blog posts. Now replace that line with the following code.

Tips to Increase Google AdSense Earnings

a. Strictly follow the rules mentioned in Adsense policies. You will always earn more revenue from Adsense by playing it clean.

b. Never modify the Google Adsense HTML code. If have trouble embedding AdSense code in your WordPress or Blogger template, take help of the AdSense support forums or send an email to your AdSense account manager.

c. Never ask your friends or visitors to click on your Google ads. Google takes click fraud very seriously. Do not include incentives of any kind on your site for users to click on your ads. Don't label Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements.".

d. Don't click on your own ads - Google is much smarter than you think and can discover invalid clicks through IP addresses, site navigation patterns, etc. If you working on a new design for your site, avoid reloading your pages (with AdSense) excessively. You can turn off AdSense temporarily and avoid invalid CPM impressions. Or you can use the unofficial Google Adsense Sandbox Tool that is accessible from Firefox, IE and other browsers to see what kind of Google ads will be served based on content (website address URL) or keywords.

e. Don't place ads in pop-up windows, ~~error pages or even empty pages~~. Update: With the new AdSense policy change, you can probably place ads on 404 pages. Check with the AdSense support team.

f. Don't start a "adsense asbestos" or "home equity loan rates" website merely to make money from accidental clicks. You will never make money out these Made for Adsense websites. Instead, write on topics what you are passionate about. Don't waste your money on high-paying adsense keywords lists. Stay away from AdSense Adwords arbitrage.

g. For short articles, CTR is best when ads are placed just above the content.

h. For long articles, CTR will improve if you place ads somewhere in middle of the content or just where the article ends - when visitors are done reading the article, they may be looking for related resources.

i. Use Text Ads instead of Image Ads as users get more options and the payout is often higher. If you still want to display image ads (for CPM), consider ad formats like the 300x250 medium rectangle or the 160x600 wide skyscraper as they support also support rich multimedia and the new gadget ads.

j. Google Ads with no background color and no borders will always perform better. Make the border color and background color same as your page background color.

k. Always put ads above the main fold. Make sure that the ad unit with the highest click through rate is the first instance of the ad code that appears in your HTML source. Since the first ad unit is always filled before the rest, you want to make sure that ad unit is located in the best placement on your page.

l. Try setting the ad link URL color to a lighter shade. If your text is black, you may make the adlink as light gray or something like #666.

m. Go Wide - The large rectangle (336x280) is the best paying Adsense format especially for text ads. Try using the 336x280 large rectangle, 300x250 medium rectangle, or 160x600 wide skyscraper.

n. Don't places images next to Google ads as that will invite a permanent ban to your AdSense account.

o. Blend AdLinks with other navigation links or place horizontal adlinks at the top of your web page. AdSense publishers are permitted to click on link unit topics on their web pages, provided that they do not click on any Google ads on the resulting page.

p. You should try adding a unit near the comments section of your blog. See more AdSense tweaks.

q. You can put upto 3 adsense units on a page. Try putting a large skyscraper on the right navigation sidebar of your website. That area is close to the browser scroll bar. You can also add 2 AdSense for search boxes and 3 adlink units.

r. The first few lines of your content are an important factor for determining what Ads are served on your webpage. That's the right place to put keywords in bold (strong or &ltb> tags) or header tags (h1, h2, etc).

s. Always select the setting to open Google Adsense search box results in a new browser window, so you won't lose your visitors. Click the Open search results in a new browser window check box and this add target="google_window" to your form tag.

t. Maximum people think the search box is on the top right corner. So you know where to put it.

u. Always syndicate full text RSS feeds and then monetize your feeds with a 468x60 ad in RSS feeds.

v. Monitor the AdSense performance of individual web pages with Google Analytic

x. Block low paying advertisers with Filters. Why to loose a visitor for an ad that will only pay you a cent. Use Overture or Google Adwords Keywords tool to discover keywords that are less popular with advertisers.

y. Learn how to implement AdSense Revenue sharing if you run a site with multiple authors and need to pay your writers based on advertising revenue generated from their articles.

z. Experiment with color schemes and layouts using split testing. You are the best judge when it comes to choosing ad formats for your own website.

Even Google doesn't offer the best advise always. For instance, in the visual heat map, Google suggests that webmasters are best served by positioning ads on the upper left-hand side of a Web page but if you go to any search page on Google, the ads the mostly in the right.

Bonus Tip: Use the AdSense Preview tool to determine what ad campaigns are currently targeted for your site in different geographic regions of the world.

I've been asked this question so many times in the past few weeks that I thought I should write something on the topic. It seems increasingly bloggers want to try to cover their hosting and ISP costs with some revenue from their blog – and increasingly they’re doing it and are able to make a few (or quite a lot) dollars on the side. Many are turning to Google’s Adsense program.

Steps to Enabling AdSense Ads on Your Blogger Blog

Log into your Blogger account.
Click the "Layout" link under your blog name on the Dashboard. If you don't have such a link, go to your Templates page for your blog and click the "AdSense" tab.
If you have clicked the "Layout" link earlier, you will now be given a choice of where to place your advertisements. For example, if you want to put your ad in the side column click the "Add a Page Element" link in that column. If you want it at the bottom of the page, click the similarly named link at the bottom.

A new window will open, allowing you to choose the type of page element you want to add. Click the checkbox beside "AdSense". You will be brought to yet another page when you do that. Look for the "Sign in" link and click it. Enter your AdSense login and password to log into your AdSense account.

Note: Those who had to click an "AdSense" tab in the first step will not have the choice of choosing where to place your advertisements. If that's the case for you, just skip to the next step.
Once you have signed in, you will be brought to a screen that allows you to choose the size and colour scheme of your advertisements. A preview window underneath your selection shows you what your advert will look like.
When you're done, click the "Save changes" button.

Table Of Contents Widget For Blogger

You might have noticed the new Table Of Contents Section On this Blog.. It uses the Selective Widget Display.. This widget requires Javascript ans hence it will take time to load.. So we will be modding it so that it will be displayed on a particular Page only..

Here is how to install it to your Blog.

Step 1: Back Up your Template.

Step 2: Add a HTML Page Element
Edit your template in HTML-mode, and look for the <b:section> with id=main. This is the section that holds the Blog posts.
Change that line as follows:
